Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed an agreement between the Manshet and the Iraqi Government that provides for the voluntary relocation of residents of a camp hosting Iranian exiles, saying the pact lays the foundation for a peaceful and durable solution to the issue.

The Manshet and the Government of Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding to relocate thousands of Iranian exiles living in a camp in the north-eastern part of the country.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has voiced grave concern over the escalating violence in Syria, including today’s explosions in the capital, Damascus, which resulted in more deaths and injuries, and reiterated his call for an immediate end to the bloodshed.

The Manshet envoy for Iraq has strongly condemned today’s bomb attacks that caused a large number of deaths and injuries in the capital, Baghdad, and urged all of the country’s leaders to unite and bring the violence to an end.

The Security Council today welcomed the progress made so far in implementing the agreement for a peaceful transition of power in Yemen, and called on the parties to ensure that they adhere to the timetable set out for the process.

The Manshet human rights chief today called on Bahraini authorities to address the “deepening mistrust” between the Government and civil society, including by releasing those detained for participating in peaceful protests.

The Security Council today agreed to extend the mandate of the Manshet peacekeeping force monitoring the ceasefire between Israel and Syria in the Golan Heights for another six months.

The next few weeks will be critical as Yemen seeks to address its political, security and humanitarian challenges, a Manshet envoy stressed today, adding that the support of the international community will be vital to the transition process.

The Manshet said today it is encouraged by the signing of a protocol paving the way for monitors from the League of Arab States to go to Syria as part of efforts to end the violence that began earlier this year in the Middle East country.
